I'm kind of new to this whole thing so I was just following the Live8 tutorial on adjusting the sound when this cropped up. If I set it back down to 44100 then windows sounds once again play through the monitor speakers (which are connected the the AK1 obviously). That forces the sound from windows (system sounds, firefox, etc) to not be heard.
